Monaro High School - Australian Record Attempt Longest Continuous Game 28th Feb 2015

The Monaro High School Basketball teams will be attempting their third Australian record for the longest continuous game of basketball at Cooma Basketball Stadium this weekend.
The teams will begin playing at 8:30am on Saturday, February 28 and aim to finish at 5:30pm on Sunday, March 1 after 33 hours of playing.
The rules for a record such as this state that each team can have 12 players and there is one minute allowed between each quarter and each game to get players back on the court and playing.
The aim of the marathon is to; develop skills and team cohesiveness, promote basketball within the school and community and raise funds to assist with uniforms for their upcoming cultural and sporting trip to Alice Springs/Uluru.
The team of students, staff and parents will travel to Alice Springs at the end of term one to compete against local school and association teams.
They also plan to visit Yulara primary school and complete the 10km walk around Uluru among other cultural activities.

A Slam Dunk for Basketball Competition

The Junior mixed basketball finished on Monday with a round of three on three non mixed basketball.
This gave the boys the chance to show their attacking skills in the key area which they cannot do in the mixed.
The games produced some strong basketball with those pitted against each other trying to prove who were the best.
All games were played in good spirit Junior basketball Mini and Aussie Hoop basketball has been a huge success in 2014 with an increase in numbers across all divisions.
All players are to be commended on their sportsmanship and the way students from the different schools came together to play in teams with people they may not have known prior to the beginning of the season.
The increased enthusiasm of the players resulted in the mixed competition being played for the first time.
Junior basketball usually finishes at the end of third term and returns the following year in second term but 2015 will see it return in first term with another mixed competition before reverting back to boys and girls competitions for terms two and three. Organisers hope to begin a second mixed competition as well which would include our miniball players.
Thank you to the players and to those parents/friends who put their hands up to help coach referee and to run the days for making it such a great year. Organisers look forward to seeing everyone in 2015.

Basketball Grand Finals - September 2014

A wonderful three nights of basketball were held last week with the A Men, A Women and B Women's grand finals on Wednesday. Thursday saw the grand finals of the Junior Girls and Division 1 and 2 Junior Boys. Thank you to the referees and bench people for giving their time on these nights.
The season ended on Friday with the 4yrs to 11 yrs Aussie Hoop and Mini Ballers putting on a display of games and drills for the very supportive spectators before collecting their awards of a trophy and basketball.
Thank you to those who put their hand up to assist with the junior miniball and aussie hoop this year and to Henry and Carol Byrne (BBQ) Julie and Mikaela Smith (canteen), Jordan Burchall (timekeeper), Pierre Wall Jack Swain, Will and Noah Saddler (on Court assistance).
Results
B Women
Bold & Beautiful were too strong for Resurrection winning 32 to18. Courtney Rolfe was a stand out for B&B with Allison Theunissen strong all over the court. Resurrection were well led by Julie Smith who has been working hard with this group of fairly new players and they can all be proud of their effort this year. A Women
Capital Dial a Pizza ran out winners over Geaches 38 to 28. The game was evenly contested throughout.

CDP were missing easy baskets whilst Geaches were putting in some great 3 pointers and at three quarter time were just ahead. Both teams were in foul trouble in the last quarter with Geaches losing two players leaving them with three players for the last minutes of play.

A Men
The A Men's GF was a battle of the old heads Camshafts against the up and coming boys from the junior competition Thunder Ducks. The teams went basket for basket for the early part of the game.
Thunder Ducks led by Tim Wall and Jacob Stiles put in a huge effort in the second quarter to outscore their opponents by 10 points. In the third quarter Camshafts' experience began to show with Cam MackIntosh (everyone who thinks they are too small for basketball should have a look at this guy play) and Simon Clear taking their team to a two point lead with one quarter to go. A great team effort by the younger players saw them take control and run out winners 61 to 52.

Junior Boys Division 2
A cliff hanger between Maroon and Green showed just how much this grade has improved and how close the four teams in the competition were. Junior Girls
This was the first girls GF for some years and players from Dynamites and Swaggers were nervous in the early stages of their game. After settling down Swaggers took the lead and were up by 4 points. Ten unanswered points by Dynamites in the final quarter saw them take the game 25 to 19 Dynamite 25 ( A Martin-Smith 8 G Steiner 7 J Statham 4 K Branscombe 4 M Janota 2 ) Swaggers 19 (A Freimanis13 C Rodger 2 T Williams 4)
Junior Boys Division 1
Red Dougs and Swaggerliciuos battled out a close one. Jarrod Sopniewski dominated early running in quick baskets for Swaggerliciuos whilst Tim Wall was leading his team Red Dougs by setting up shots for his players. Swaggerliciuos led for most of the game but Tim Wall and Jacob Stiles stepped up in the closing stages stages to take RD to the lead and a 3 point win Red Dougs 43 (T Wall 6 J Stiles 22 J Harding 5 D Li 8D Freimanis 2 ) d Swaggerlicious 40 (J Sopniewski 24 T Peilli 8 P Wall 8).

3 on 3 Mens Competition Starting

A 3 on 3 mens competition will begin this evening Wednesday 5th February at 6:30pm. If you are interested contact Brian Geach or come down to Cooma Basketball Stadium at 6:30pm Wednesdays.

Annual General Meeting

The Cooma Basketball Stadium Annual General Meeting will be held Tuesday 4th February at the Cooma Ex-Services Club at 6pm. Everyone invited.

Disability Access for Stadium

The Basketball Association received news this week that a new entrance, ramp and toilet for people with a disability along with a storage room had been approved by council. The council will provide $23,200 towards the cost with $25,000 coming from a State Government Grant obtained by the basketball. Construction will commence in early 2014. Basketball for people with a disability is played on Tuesdays and the Canberra wheel chair basketball has indicated it would like to come to Cooma for demonstration games later in the year.

An increase in interest in basketball has prompted the committee to commence the 2014 season in February. This will be a lead up to the main season which is school terms 2 and 3.The association is looking at holding 'A' grade men's and 'A' and 'B' grade women's competitions. There is a high school boy's competition that is currently running until April when they will hold their grade finals. It is hoped that this competition will continue throughout 2014. The association is looking at forming a new school girl's competition for 12 year olds up. This competition will be aimed at teaching new players the game as well as taking our Wednesday girls to a more challenging level A successful 11yrs to 14yrs boy's competition was held in 2013 and this will continue in 2014.Mini Ball (8yrs to11yrs) and Aussie Hoop (4yrs to7yrs) will also be held for both boys and girls These are non competitive with all players receiving an award at the end of the year .A referees clinic will be held in February All teams will be required to have some players attend whilst non players looking for something to do will be welcomed with opened arms. Junior and mini ball coaching clinics to improve the player's skills and to prepare them for the representative games will also be held. More coaches are needed especially for the junior competitions .The club is also looking at obtaining sponsors for much needed new representative tops. Twelve sets are required at a cost of $300 per set (includes sponsors name) Please contact Brian Geach or Betty Longhurst if you would be willing to sponsor a set.

Games Go Down to the Wire - Round 2 Boys Spring Comp 2013

The first night of round two was the closest and most intense by far on Monday, with both games in going right down to the wire.

The Supersonics were looking for their first win, and the Wings were looking to maintain their unbeaten streak.

Tyler Pielli and Tyler Fanning had terrific chemistry and were effective in both offence and defence.

Thijs de Ruijter was excellent for his team and was strong in defence. Isaac Singh was brilliant with his rebounding, taking down many, many boards, and Daniel Swain and Jimmy Harding were also both great on both ends of the court.

Dane Freimanis opened the scoring for the Wings, and was terrific early on, but unfortunately went down with a knee injury early in the game. Aidan Griffith had a great game defensively, as did Aidan Webb, who was always right on his man and made a lot of plays on the offensive end. The Supersonics had a 14-0 run at the start of the game, but the Wings slowly chipped away at this lead, coming into the fourth quarter only behind by a few points. They then levelled the score and poked their noses in front, but the Supersonics played hard, taking back the lead multiple times. The final score was 56-55 to the Wings in a very hard fought battle. MVP's went to Aidan Webb for the Wings and Tyler Fanning for the Supersonics.

GAME TWO:

The Ravens and Warriors game was the closest game of the season. It was a very low scoring contest for the first three quarters with some very tight defence on both ends of the floor, but both teams opened up in the last quarter with a very high scoring final session. Daniel Hopkin, for the Ravens, was outstanding, making steals, intercepts, good passes and great shots. Ethan Hunt had his game of the season, with lots of points and a very good presence on the court, especially considering his age. Kyle Hubert was strong offensively and Ben Trotter was great at taking rebounds. The Warriors were strong with Jerod Blyton under the basket and blocking out the offence very effectively. Daniel Pevere and Jacob Stiles worked well together offensively. Toby Williams was having a great game, with great ball control, shot selection and defence. Charlie Keegan-Bull had a great game on both ends of the court and made some very good shots. The game came right down to the final buzzer, with the Warriors down 37-38 with 7 seconds to go. The Ravens gave up a foul in some very pressured defence. This foul would not have been worth two shots, but the Ravens had already given up 5 fouls in the quarter, meaning the Warriors were gifted with a bonus two shots. Daniel Pevere headed to the line, and with all the pressure, managed to hit the first shot. This brought the game to 38 all. He missed the second shot, and the Ravens pounced upon the rebound, but were unable to score in the 7 seconds remaining. This left us with the first draw of the season, the game ending at 38-38, and some great basketball was played. MVP's went to Toby Williams for the Warriors and Ethan Hunt for the Ravens.

The Cooma basketball stadium was packed last Wednesday for the Aussie Hoop, Mini Ball and Junior Basketball presentation day.Family and friends watched as the players took part in games and an Aussie Hoop training display.A game was also played between a group of 14-16yrs boys to show the younger players how they could be playing in a few years time.Three of these boys Tim Wall, Jarrod Sopniewski and Daniel Pevere backed up on Wednesday night in the A Grade Men's Grand Finals where they were runners up.Tim was awarded the M.V.P Trophy.

More than 20 junior girls took part in the A and B Women's Grand Finals in 2013 -a great achievement by all players. Awards for the 2013 season were held with the Aussie Hoop players receiving a glow in the dark trophy and a basketball. These went to Georgia Harmer, Sophie Caldwell, Emily Revelant, Leanne, Skye and Ethan Adams, Hunter Caldwell, Joshua Verspae, Oliver Woolley, Cooper Walsh, Jackson Lee, Jett Kelly, Khian Flanagan, James Burke, Zachary Dowd, Daniel Nassar, Max Forrest, Oliver Pauls, Ari Geach, Harry McIntyre, Ashton and Cade Dibley.

Mini Ball and Junior players received a trophy and a basketball cap. Mini Ball awards went to Lily and Ella Velera, Natalie Revelant, Lani Holfter, Jordan and Charli Wiggins, Tayla Williams, Caitlyn Jones, Molly Brabham, Brittany Burchall, Sasha Allan, Taylah Maurier, Amber Martin-Smith, Abbey Sopniewski, Margaret Smith, James Dyball, Troy Rees, Talon Kelly, Hugo Steiner, Tristian Revelant, Ryan Harmer, Sam Woolley, Mitchell Burke, Hudson Laird, Aiden Childs and Bailee Walsh.

Junior awards were received by Tanika Williams, Rachel Hunt, Hayley Jones, Zara Childs, Michaela Smith, Summer Rees, Abby Fremanis, Karley Britton, Sam Froeschl, Sean Trickery, Jakob Asanovski, Tyler Fanning, Isaac Singh, Aidan Griffith, Daniel Pevere, Ethan Hunt, Tyler Pielli, Toby Williams, Charlie Keegan, Ben Trotter, Jarrod Sopniewski, Kyle Hubert, Tim and Pierre Wall.

Twenty other boys received their awards on Thursday night after the under 14 Grand Finals. A special presentation was also made on Thursday night to Tim Wall and Jarrod Sopniewski for their contribution to junior basketball in 2013. Thank you to all players, parents and helpers and we hope to see you back in 2014.

It was a big night of basketball on Monday with the grand finals of the junior boys, B Grade women, A Grade women and men's played at the Cooma Basketball Stadium.
Blue Marlins ran out winners 51-40 over the Hornets in the junior boys match, with Groundhogs too strong for the Allsorts in the B Grade women's winning 39-25. In the A Grade women's game Mainstreet defeated Geachy's 42-38 and in the men's grand final Grasshoppers beat Snowy 50 - 46.
Junior boys
In a hard fought battle Blue Marlins ran out winners 51-40 over the Hornets . Tim Wall led his young team strongly, scoring 26 points and defending and rebounding well. Tim ensured that during the competition his young players Will Saddler, Jimmy Harding, Pierre Wall, Ethan Hunt and Keilan Johnson had plenty of court time and were able to stand their own against the bigger Hornets. He was also well assisted by Jerod Blyton who had his first season. Hornets can hold their heads high as they were left with just four players for the game. Daniel Pevere was strong in attack along with Kyle Hubert while Ben Trotter was one of the most improved players of the season. Daniel Hopkin had his first season and is one to watch next year. Well done to all the boys.

B Grade women
Groundhogs proved too strong for the much improved Allsorts running out winners 39-25. Ailish Pope dominated for the Groundhogs scoring 25 points with Amanda Fitzgerald scoring nine points. For the Allsorts the scoring was evenly spread out among the team.

A Grade women
In a tight match up of the two top teams of the competition Mainstreet defeated Geachy's 42-38.
Open men
Minor premiers Grasshoppers overcame Snowy 50-46 in the open men's grand final.
Grasshoppers started with a lightning steal by Jarrod Sopneiwski only to be fouled on the lay up and having to go to the line for the first point off the game. This was followed by two points from a strong rebound by Tanel Joosep to make the score 3-nil.
The reply was swift by Snowy's Malcom Anderson with a three pointer out of no where to make it three all.
This set the tone and pace for the remainder of the game.
The quarter continued basket for basket with Grasshoppers going to the foul line through Tim Wall's strong moves to the hoop and Snowy's intention not to make it easy for the Grasshoppers. Down the other end Matt Booker was working hard.
Grasshoppers went to the first break four point ahead, but both teams had a high foul count.
The second quarter belonged to the Grasshoppers with Simon Clear stamping his mark on the game with a number of fast breaks and points from the line. Tanel also continued backing up under the basket and was rewarded for his efforts helping Simon claim the points for the quarter.
Snowy's big men Antony Brennan, with Matt and Mal, scored valueable points to keep Grasshoppers from running away with the score.
Both teams entertained the crowd with some tremendous plays under the oppositions basket and variety of shots including fade away jump shots, revese pivot and step round drives to the basket to try and get through the tight defence. At half-time it looked like Grasshoppers were stretching ahead with a 27 to 20 score line.
Snowy came out guns blazing in the third quarter which saw great defensive rebounds by Snowy feed Mal Anderson and Tom Stewart for the fast break. This quickly brought the score closer. The quarter was highlighted by some magnificent individual plays. A drive by Snowy quashed by Grasshoppers only to see some quick passes then a long pass across the key looking lost, only to be collected on the run by Damien Asanovski who landed sweetly did a 180 deg turn and gently popped the ball into the basket off the board with defensive bodies all around, and all in a fraction of a second.

Then on the counter attack Pat Swain took the ball from the base line throw in and indicated his intensions with a purposful intial bounce and focusced look on his face, to start his journey to the other ring. Flicking the ball from hand to hand changing direction several times including two behind the back dribbles, went the length of the court threading his way through the defence only to be denied the basket with a poor bounce off the back of the ring.
Pat finished the quarter having to go to the line right on the break with a double set of three throws due to a double foul, then sinking two from four. The period belonged to Snowy who brought the score back to four points at the conclusion of three quarter time.
You could feel the tension building in the final quarter as Snowy picked up the first points and leveled the scores. This quarter was the tightest of the game with players not only feeling the energy pinch but due to the hard work in defense foul trouble loomed on both sides. This saw the battle between the guards with Simon Clear, with great support from defensive rebounds by Chris Wall, Tanel and Pat, be able to feed him the ball and secure all the points for the quarter. Then Mal Anderson on fast break and Matt Booker under the ring for Snowy seal their points for the quarter. The final minutes saw both teams untilize their time outs. Both went to the line in the dying seconds with Tom Stewart needing to sink both baskets to keep within two. it didn't evetuate and Grasshoppers capitalized on their free throws and held on to win 50 to 46.
Best for the Grashoppers were Simon Clear, Tim Wall and Tanel Joosep. For Snowy Matt Booker, Anthony Brennan and Mal Anderson excelled with great support from Damien Asanovski and Corey Tucker. This game capped off a fantastic evening of basketball. with all the players, helpers, and supproters to be commended on making the night such a success.
